What do you think of Hitler's artwork being purchased for the only reason to be defaced and altered?

The Champman brothers purchased Hitler's artwork just deface it.

Although Hitler is considered to be one of the most evil men in history, isn't his artwork significant and should be preserved for future generations to see his artwork?

A lot of people disagree with certain artists political views or actions they have did. For example, Leonardo Divinci is despised by Chritians for being an athiest and criticizing the instability of the Christian Church, yet, Christians do not purchase his work and deface it.

Once an artwork is defaced, it can not be restored for later studies and thus becomes forgotten.

Even though there moments in history that we want to forget or change, should we change them instead of remembering and learning from them?

I don't think the work should have been changed. It should have been kept as it was, and not displayed as "If HItler was a hippie..." Hitler wasn't a hippie! I'm sure someone will regret it in the future, just like we would be sorry that the Parthenon is not standing today.

Frankly, Scarlet....
Reply:no its bitchy. Learn from mistakes made!
Reply:I don't agree with what they did. History is important and should be preserved like you said. I understand their desire to do it but I think it was the wrong thing personally.
Reply:That's a little obsessive. I'd have to know more about the brother's background, whether they or someone they konw had personally suffered because of something Hitler did, but I think maybe they're compensating for something in themselves. I think maybe art is the one good thing Hitler had in him, and people want to destroy that as quickly as they can. (Don't get me wrong, I think he's a terrible person, I'm just speculating)
Reply:You sound like the people complaining about Jew's buying everything. It was for sale, they bought it it's theirs. Get over it. Everything is for sale at some price, buy it if you want, just stop complaining if you have not worked hard enough to afford it.
Reply:who are the chapman brothers?

i agree with the guy on top of me.

but look at it this way. leonardo davinci did NOT kill millions of people. he did not cause millions to suffer, he did not cause a world wide war.

some can even say that hitler helped the united states with the depression.

i mean he painted them when he was young, what good can people get out of "studying" some kid's art.

in the end, it is all just meaningless anyway.
Reply:Those guys p!ss me off to no end. I remember when they defaced all the prints by Francisco de Goya.

That infuriated me. I'd buy their artwork just to deface it myself, and sell it at a ridiculous marked up price which is what they always do.

Artwork is meant to be appreciated just as it is, Art. If everyone associated Artwork with the Artists, no doubt all Art would be offensive, even Art that is now universally admired and appreciated.
Reply:I think it's dumb -- art is art, and it should be appreciated as such, no matter what the political views of the artist are/were. If people want to factor Hitler's politics and reputation into his art, then it would make sense that they should be able to use his art as a learning tool. Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it..... and art is a (pretty significant) part of history.
Reply:If Hilter is really good at Art, he would not enter politics.

The idiots brothers have too much money to spare.

They should have use their money for more meaningful stuff rather than trying to piss off a dead guy.
