The sitting King Harold Godwinson (Harold II) the Earl of Wessex, who the dying King Edward the Confessor pointed to on his deathbed, which was intepreted as pointing to his successor.

Harald III of Norway aka Harald Hardrada, his predecessor and nephew Magnus I of Denmark and King Canute III of Norway and England supposedly agreed that the last of two would be King of England, Denmark and Norway. Thus, a tenuous blood connection.

William, the Duke of Norrmandy, whose aunt was the mother of Edward the Confessor. Also, William claimed Edward promised him the throne while Edward was exile in Normandy and that Harold, who was shipwrecked and rescued by William in France, pledged to support William's claim, swearing to it over religous relics making it a solemn vow.

At Stamford Bridge, Harold Godwinson's army confronted Hardrada's army by surprised as they were expected days later. Thus, Hadrada's army had no armor, no defenses set up and were separated by a river. Unfortunately, it was a short-lived victory as William had landed and Harold hurried to confront him.
