In the wild west, did cowboys take off their hats indoors? Like in the stereotypical scene where cowboys are sitting in a saloon, would they really wear their hats indoors or take off their hats indoors?

I would say they would take them off. Forget the movies.

People still had manners in those days and men would lift

their hats for ladies and ministers etc and it was considered

good manners to remove your hat when you went inside. I have seen old photos of saloons and things and most of the men were not wearing their hats indoors. That is just my opinion.

In my day, here in Texas we took our hats off indoors. Please realize that is recent history too, 1960's rather than 1860's but it is true. Also it is important to note that public places all provided someplace for a man to put his hat. a hat rack was in every cafe just inside the door. I can remember going to a bar and dancehall and having my hat taken off for me by a bouncer when I forgot to remove it. Times have changed but back in the day we took our hats off indoors.
Reply:the first answerer is right. but they could still wear it. what is this question for anyway?
Reply:Yes they did. Also remember that in the 19th century, it was obligatory for a man to wear a hat or cap outdoors. The particular form of the stetson is a response to weather conditions.
Reply:Yes. Any saloon where men wore their hats indoors was a "rough" place.
Reply:Little of both
