What is holocaust?

the Holocaust is when the Nazis started killing all the Jews in WW2
What is holocaust?
It was a sad time period when Adolf Hitler led a group named the Nazi's and used racism as a theme to kill the ones that had traits of their disliking. To Hitler, this included Jews, so this led to millions of Jewish people's death. This is one of the saddest chapters of history.
What is holocaust?
During World War II, the Nazis instituted a plan to exterminate Jews in Europe. They succeeded in killing six million Jews (and millions of non-Jews, as well). This genocide is known as the Holocaust.

Reply:Literally, the word means "total burning." Nathaniel Hawthorne, who died in 1864, wrote a story called "Earth's Holocaust," in which people begin by burning their useless and unwanted things and end by burning EVERYTHING. Well before then, however, the word had been used specifically to refer to genocide, an attempt to wipe out an entire people. I remember first hearing it used specifically about the Nazi attempt to exterminate Jews in the 1970s, but it may have been used in that context earlier. This article provides much more information:
